Packaging Disposal Regulations

Instructions for disposal of packaging material.

The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations which were introduced in Ireland in 1998 as part of an amendment to the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 1997require producers and retailers to ensure that only packaging which complies with all of the following essential requirements may be placed on the market.

Essential Requirements

  • Packaging volume and weight must be the minimum amount to maintain necessary levels of safety, hygiene and acceptance for the packed product and for the consumer
  • Packaging must be suitable for at least one of the following – material recycling, energy recovery or organic recovery.
  • Noxious or hazardous substances and materials in packaging must be minimised in emissions, ash or leachate from incineration or landfill.
